約7年、弓削で手掛けてきた彼の仕事の集大成と言っていいでしょう。

1. Five stars: A Solution to solving the world's energy problems!

I'm about halfway through and I find this book amazingly an organization/extension of some things I've been thinking regarding energy, about 3 orders of magnitude more effective. It is well written and conversational, with nice illustrations ranging from tropical river traffic to wiring of simple solar panels. I haven't gotten to the more esoteric (to me) manufacture of 'intermittent' DC generators, or circuit construction yet, although I can tell by the clear writing that I will be able to make them.
The basic idea is to simplify solar energy use and localize it, avoiding the current (no pun intended, but I'm ok with it) built-in thinking that your solar panels should be used with complex electronics (inverters, grid tie things, dc-dc conversions) and connected to the rest of the world. Keep solar very local and simple, as in for example DC from panels going right to your coffeemaker, no inverters or other things in the way. Which, the author says, can sort of make the economic return from your panels the equal of having an oil well in your backyard!
So I love the book so far and will report back when I finish it. Some of the ideas are similar to mine but in a more orderly manner. For example, I have some solar power and do try to run the dishwasher etc during hours of most sunlight, but this was always way in the back of my mind; he explicitly states this as a major policy for the world!
Update after reading second half: Whew Lots more practical advice on establishing a local solar power center with a super return on investment and minimal reliance on loans from banks. It is really a manifesto for one of the most logical ways of energy existence for a new world. CAUTION: While parts of the book are philosophical, the nitty gritty of using solar panels economically in this non-standard manner requires quite a bit of electrical/electronic competence--even though, and especially so because he gives many circuit diagrams/board art and instructions for many different situations you might encounter.
It is slightly oriented toward life in city/urban areas in one small area: some of the interrupted DC appliances he advises on are heating devices, which in the country, might be done by burning wood, or even solar ovens etc.
He mentions in the book and has an incipient website diygrid.net, where he will sell kits and boards, but it doesn't seem to be operating yet. And he plans seminars and q/a sessions to help users. AND, there's more: buying one of the first thousand books gives you certain PATENT RIGHTS! No kidding.
It's a great book with ideas that will prolong human civilization, I've only mentioned a small part of it.
2. Five stars: A More Efficient Approach to Solar Power Usage

Take Back The Power convincingly describes the problems with centralized government and corporate monopoly control over the power grid (and as a result over our lives and wallets) and provides detailed practical and realistic solutions to promote more efficient and independent energy usage and living in general. The recent probable state-sponsored hacks into US government computers as well as other attacks specifically on utility systems highlight how vulnerable the power grid may be. The Take Back The Power model puts control back into local and individual groups and persons. All hardware for building out your own electricity systems to more efficiently utilize solar are explained in a DIY manner. A web contact is provided for individuals to meet and help each other in their build outs.
Dr. Motsenbocker explains in great detail how his interrupted DC systems can be implemented and, since he has implemented many if not most of his ideas at his property, it is clear his solutions actually work in practice.
Take Back The Power illuminates a clear path to energy efficiency, economic savings, and personal independence. Those who now hold the power and those who aspire to taking it back can learn much from this book.
